Yoga day in Indonesia: Celebrations to be held across the country

In September 2014, at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the adoption of the International Day of Yoga.

In September 2014, at the 69thsession of the UN General Assembly,Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed theadoption of the International Day of Yoga.  The proposal was endorsed by 175 member states, which led the United Nations to proclaim June 21 as the International Day of Yoga,popularly known as Yoga Day.  The Yoga Day in Indonesia hasbeen celebrated three times. However, this year, the event is set beevenbigger, backed bythe support ofthe Tourism Ministry.  The inaugural event, Yoga Day in Indonesia, kicked off on April 22 at Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) in Malang, East Java, and wasfollowed byvarious events in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Bali, Surabaya and Medan.  Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement that yoga wasan exercise that focused on strength and breathing to improve one'smental and physical state. The exercise has attracted many people, including Indonesians. Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Pradeep Kumar Rawat welcomed everyone to join the Yoga Day’s celebration.  The peak of the celebration is scheduled to be held atPrambanan Temple in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on June 24. This event is expected to welcome around 10,000 participants.  For the main celebration, there will be yoga instructors from India whohavebeen trained in accordance with the International Day of Yoga’s standardized protocol.
