According to data released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on Monday, Indonesia welcomed a staggering 4.12 million international visitors between January and May, signifying a remarkable recovery for the country's tourism sector after being severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Rapid Growth in Foreign Arrivals

The data revealed a momentous 312.91 percent year-on-year increase in foreign arrivals during the January-May period. This surge accounted for a significant 70 percent of the total foreign arrivals in 2022. May alone saw 945,590 foreign visitors, indicating a 9.21 percent increase compared to the previous month and an impressive surge of 166.42 percent year-on-year.

Among the countries contributing to this surge, Malaysian nationals topped the list with 169,190 arrivals, constituting a share of 17.9 percent. Australia followed closely with 113,860 visits, and Singapore with 100,730 visits. This influx of visitors from neighboring countries has played a pivotal role in the exponential growth of international arrivals.

Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali continues to be the primary entry point for foreign visitors, receiving a staggering 1.86 million international passengers from January to May. Following closely in second place is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with 639,497 international arrivals.
